Ono Hawaiian BBQ Breaks Ground in San Bernardino
On August 29, 2024, Ono Hawaiian BBQ broke ground on its newest location at San Bernardino's 5th Street Gateway. This marks a significant milestone for the popular Hawaiian barbecue chain as it opens its third-ever drive-through location. The event was attended by representatives from the mayor's office, investors, and construction partners, but the absence of Councilman Theodore Sanchez, who represents Ward 1 where the project is located, did not go unnoticed despite his prior confirmation of attendance.
A Missed Opportunity for Community Support
David Friedman, co-owner and CEO of Realicore Real Estate Group, the developer responsible for the build-to-suit project, expressed mixed emotions at the groundbreaking event. "I’m thrilled to see this project moving forward and grateful for the support from our community leaders like Councilman Damon Alexander," Friedman stated. However, he also voiced disappointment regarding Councilman Sanchez’s absence. "It’s unfortunate that Councilman Sanchez was unable to attend. We had hoped to see him support this significant development in his ward."
Construction and Design Details
RBC Construction Inc., the contractor for the project, has already started laying the foundation and installing utilities for the upcoming 2,400-square-foot building. Departing from the traditional Hawaiian-themed aesthetic, the new location will boast a mid-century modern design, akin to popular brands like Starbucks and 7-Eleven. PDB Collaborative is managing the architectural engineering of the project, with Danielle Foley leading the team. This modern approach signals Ono Hawaiian BBQ’s effort to blend into the evolving urban landscape of San Bernardino.

Friedman underscored the broader economic benefits of this development, emphasizing its potential to boost the local economy. "This project is not just about building a new restaurant; it’s about creating opportunities for residents," Friedman explained. "The construction alone is providing good temporary income for the area, and once operational, the restaurant will offer employment for up to 25 residents." The new drive-through location aims to contribute significantly to the area’s economic recovery, bringing both temporary construction jobs and permanent positions in the restaurant industry.
The 5th Street Gateway
The new Ono Hawaiian BBQ is part of a larger redevelopment plan for the 5th Street Gateway. This project includes adding several other popular brands, such as Chipotle, Sonic, and Quick Quack Car Wash, transforming the area into a bustling commercial hub. The development aims to revitalize San Bernardino, attracting more visitors and providing residents with a fresh array of dining and service options.
Reflecting on the decision to include Ono Hawaiian BBQ in this redevelopment, Friedman highlighted the chain's strategic focus on drive-through expansion. "We considered other options, including Shake Shack, but Ono Hawaiian BBQ was the right fit," he said. "They’ve been great to work with, and their commitment to San Bernardino as part of their drive-through expansion strategy is commendable." The selection of Ono Hawaiian BBQ reflects a thoughtful approach to meeting local demand while fostering community growth.
Looking Ahead: A New Chapter for San Bernardino
With construction expected to be completed by the end of the first quarter of next year, the new Ono Hawaiian BBQ location is set to play a pivotal role in the ongoing revitalization of San Bernardino. The drive-through format, modern design, and strategic location are poised to attract locals and visitors, contributing to the economic and social vibrancy of the 5th Street Gateway.
As San Bernardino continues to evolve, the arrival of Ono Hawaiian BBQ signals a promising future for the community. With a focus on job creation, economic growth, and community involvement, this new development serves as a testament to the city’s resilience and potential for renewal.
