This summer, we at The Arias Journal ventured into bold territory with our opinion on Kamala Harris’s selection of Tim Walz as her vice-presidential running mate. While we hadn't previously published detailed critiques on Walz, we posed the question of whether his choice might be a misstep. As the campaign has progressed, recent developments have prompted us to revisit our stance and consider Walz’s role in a new light. This article will explore how Tim Walz has emerged as a surprisingly effective component of Harris’s campaign strategy.

The Initial Opinion

Our initial opinion on Kamala Harris’s choice of Tim Walz was based on the perception that he might not be the most strategic pick. We had advocated for Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, who seemed to offer a more moderate profile and could potentially attract a broader spectrum of voters. Shapiro's youth and moderate stance appeared well-suited to highlight generational change in the election. In contrast, Walz’s progressive record and relatively sudden rise made us question his long-term effectiveness as a vice-presidential nominee.

Our concern was rooted in Walz’s emerging prominence, largely driven by his media appearances and his progressive platform, which might attract scrutiny and potential controversy. We wondered whether his relatively obscure background might pose risks for the campaign.

Walz’s Impact Over Labor Day

Recent events have provided new insights into Walz’s role. His performance during the Labor Day weekend rally in Wisconsin showcased his ability to resonate with voters and effectively counter Donald Trump’s populist appeal. Walz’s speeches have highlighted the contrasts between Trump’s promises to the wealthy and his treatment of working-class issues.

In his remarks, Walz criticized Trump’s tax cuts for the rich while disparaging workers' wages and public services. His statements, such as, “You tell me who in Wisconsin is sitting around saying, ‘Damn, I wish they’d give billionaires tax cuts and screw me over,’” demonstrate his capacity to address the concerns of everyday voters with clarity and impact. Walz has also skillfully reframed contentious issues like abortion, criticizing Republicans for advocating for a government “small enough to be in your bedroom.” This approach has resonated with voters who feel alienated by current political dynamics.

The Appeal of the Everyman

Walz’s appeal contrasts sharply with that of Trump’s VP pick, Sen. J.D. Vance. While Vance’s demeanor and ideological stance have been seen as drawbacks, Walz’s authentic and relatable style has made him a compelling figure. His ability to connect with voters through straightforward communication has proven to be an asset for the campaign.

Reevaluating the Opinion

Our initial preference for Shapiro was based on his moderate record and youthful image. However, Walz’s charisma and ability to engage with working-class voters have emerged as significant advantages. While Shapiro’s profile might have had its merits, Walz’s direct approach and relatable persona seem to align well with Harris’s campaign strategy. Despite initial concerns about Walz’s rapid rise and progressive record, the lack of aggressive media attacks and Trump’s focus on irrelevant issues have allowed Walz to navigate these challenges effectively.

As the election nears, every element of the campaign gains importance. While running mates may not be the central focus, their influence on the margins can be crucial in a close race. Walz’s ability to connect with rural and working-class voters, combined with his impactful speeches, suggests that Harris’s choice may have been strategically sound.

Reflecting on the developments since Walz’s selection, it is clear that our initial opinion might have been premature. Walz’s role in the campaign has proven to be valuable, and his presence could significantly impact the election’s outcome. As the campaign continues, Kamala Harris’s decision to select Tim Walz appears increasingly justified.
